One of the primary missions of the New England Brigade is to provide functioning headquarters command and staff for Civil War events.  The commanding officer of the New England Brigade holds the rank of colonel of volunteers.  He serves as the commanding officer of the Union forces at New England Brigade events.  He has a headquarters staff that recreates the General Staff and Staff Corps of the United States Army as they existed from the time of the Employment of Volunteers Act of July 22, 1861, through the end of the war in May of 1865.

The Line

Reporting to brigade headquarters are the regiments of the line.  The New England Brigade provides functioning regimental headquarters with staffs.
